Stainless steel or corrosion-resistant steel is an alloy of iron with a minimum of 10,5% chromium content (modern stainless steel alloys contain up to 30% chromium). Plain steel would rust easily when exposed to air (rust becomes red) unless it is protected from corrosion in a certain way. In addition to alloying with a minimum of 10,5% chromium, to make steel corrosion resistant (passive), another condition has to be fulfilled, the existence of a homogeneous single-phase ferrite, austenitic or martensitic microstructure. This prevents the risk of forming an area with different electric potential from the potential of the base mass.
