Stainless steel or corrosion-resistant steel is an alloy of iron and at least 10.5% chromium (modern stainless steels contain up to 30% chromium), unlike ordinary steel that oxidizes rapidly in air (the oxide is red) if it is not in some way protected from corrosion. In addition to alloying with at least 10.5% chromium, in order for the steel to be corrosion resistant (passive), another requirement must be met, namely the existence of a homogeneous single phase ferritic, austenitic or martensitic microstructure, to avoid the danger of formation of an area with different electric potential than the potential of the main mass.
